Harris/Walz: Joy, Fire, and Optimism to Nurture the Next Generation
This morning Vice President Kamala Harris - the Democratic candidate for the President of the United States - named Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. She could not have picked a better person for the job. Yes, I live in Minnesota and am a little biased! Still, the astrology for the two as a pair is outstanding. I’ll talk a bit more about that later. First, I’ll talk a bit about Tim Walz’s birth chart and the transit chart for this morning, explaining how you can see the event in the transit chart from today as it hits his birth chart.
First, surprise, surprise, Tim Walz has A LOT of powerful Aries energy. Aries is a fire sign that gets things going. Mars, the god of war, conflict, and self-assertion, rules Aries. Walz has Mars along with the Sun and Jupiter in the sign. Whenever a planet is in a sign it rules, it has extra power; that’s why I put a little red star by Mars in the chart! Today, as Harris named Walz as her choice for Vice President, that super-charged Mars was in the “mouth of the dragon.” If you look at the outer wheel, you see that the North Node of the moon, which is known as the head of the dragon in Vedic astrology, was one degree away from Mars, moving toward it and giving it a powerful boost.
Walz has already demonstrated his capacity for powerful, direct speech that destroys his opponents. Yet he does so playfully and optimistically; where does that come from? Jupiter, the god of optimism and exuberance, “You can do it!” is right there with Mars in Aries.
Walz also has a lovely, rare energy in his chart. Check out the pink circles in the inner wheel (his birth chart), and you can see that his Moon, which represents emotions and nurturing, is in a beautiful trine (120-degree angle) to Venus, the goddess of love, relationship, and justice. A trine is the most positive aspect you can have in a chart; it is of the nature of Jupiter, supporting and providing assistance to whatever planet it touches. Walz also has his North Node in Cancer in his birth chart, doubling down on the idea that part of his destiny is to nurture and support others. The North Node can symbolize the telos or aim of this lifetime. Cancer is a feminine water sign ruled by the Moon. It is about home, family, and tribe—creating, protecting, and preserving a sacred space for others, especially children, to thrive and grow.
You can see this nurturing relational energy in Walz’s actions in the world, from pictures of him holding a baby pig and riding a roller coaster with his daughter at the Minnesota State Fair to the photos of him being embraced by the children of Minnesota as he signs a bill providing free breakfast and lunch to be served in schools for all students.
What is striking is that this aspect in the birth chart (inner wheel) is repeated in today’s transit chart (outer wheel) and the connections between his birth chart and the transit chart. The Moon and Venus are both in Virgo in the transit chart (outer wheel), AND Venus in his birth chart is aspecting the Moon in today’s transit chart.
In political astrology, the Moon represents the people. Venus can represent everything from social justice to women’s rights to a candidate like Kamala Harris, who has a Libra Sun (Venus rules Libra).
Considering this, Harris’s choice of Walz as Vice President feels like a big win for Harris and progressive causes that focus on supporting the health and welfare of all citizens, especially younger generations. This is especially true when you examine the connections between her and Walz’s birth charts.
The chart above shows that Walz’s Jupiter is right on Vice President Harris’s Moon. As I noted above, the Moon can represent “the people.” This is especially true when the Moon is in the 11th House of “good spirit,” benefactors, groups, and collective consciousness. Jupiter has extra power in the 11th House, where it is in its “joy.” Jupiter expands whatever it touches, suggesting that having Walz on the ticket will expand Harris’s appeal among the voters. On top of that, Walz’s Jupiter has extra power because it is in the sign of its ruler, Mars. If you’ve looked at Twitter lately, you can see how much Walz’s firey direct speech already appeals to voters.
You can also see that Walz and Harris will have great chemistry. Walz’s Sun is in the sign of Harris’s Moon. Whenever someone’s Moon is in the sign of someone’s Sun, there is an instant sense of recognition and understanding—they “get” each other. In addition, Walz’s Venus is in Harris’s first house, making her feel “seen,” and offering extra support to Harris’s status and presence in the world.
