Full Moon in Leo Square Uranus, Moments of Change and Uncertainty
On February 12, we have a Full Moon in the third decan of Leo (“Leo III”). Uranus, the great “awakener,” is squaring the Full Moon, suggesting a sudden event that may force us to wrestle with complex questions that arise in its wake. We may face competing energies around winners and losers, action and non-action, insiders and outsiders, fantasy and reality. There is a lot of watery emotional energy in the background of the chart, suggesting we may feel confused and emotional in the wake of this tense energy.
Uranus is a planet akin to the Tower card in Tarot. It was discovered during the French and American Revolutions and symbolizes originality, individuality, innovation, and rebellion. Uranus represents sudden change, breakthroughs, and unconventional thinking.
When I take in the chart, I can almost feel the energy of Uranus slamming into the Full Moon, breaking it in two, forcing us to adapt and open to some new understanding. The image of slamming comes from a couple of things in the chart. First, Uranus, the Sun, and the Moon are all in “fixed” signs, signs that like things to stay the same, love their routine, fear change, and hold onto their belief systems for dear life. Second, Uranus’s power is supercharged because it is in such a “tight” aspect to the Full Moon—it is at 23.20 degrees, and the Full Moon is at 24.06 degrees.
The idea that we may be forced to wrestle with complex questions in the wake of this energy comes from the Tarot cards corresponding with the last decan (10 degrees) of these fixed signs where the Sun, Moon, and Uranus are located.
The last decans of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) correspond to the 7s in the Tarot deck. The 7s carry the energy of discernment and choice: “Is there anything else I can do to protect this beautiful crop?” (Taurus/Pentacles/Earth); “should I keep fighting, or let it go?” (Leo/Wands/Fire); “will that new car, relationship, job, toy, drink satisfy my hunger for connection, or is it an illusion?” (Scorpio/Cups/Water); and “should I stay, or should I go?” (Aquarius/Swords/Air).

Mars and Saturn, the two more difficult planets, are in water signs, suggesting that as we struggle with any sudden changes that come with this Full Moon, we may feel a range of difficult emotions such as confusion and disillusionment (Saturn, Neptune, and North Node in Pisces), irritability and powerlessness (Mars, in his “fall,” in Cancer).
What can we do to help find our ground amid this Full Moon's powerful and possibly destabilizing energy? We could look to the energy of the last decan of Scorpio for help. That decan opposes Uranus in the chart and may provide a counter-balancing energy.
Scorpio III calls us to let go of illusions around what nurtures us in this lifetime. To see through fantasy and illusion, to choose what sustains the soul over what offers the illusion of what we imagine may nurture us and make us feel cozy and safe. The 7 of Cups carries images of the seven deadly sins, the ego-based desires that tempt us to escape from life. When we grapple with the energy of Scorpio III, we grapple with questions of life and death, questions of whether we choose to be present to “what is” (life) or grasp at escapist fantasies that temporarily numb us to the pain of the world (death).

If this all feels a bit heavy, that is because it is. Our nation is in unchartered territories, and we are experiencing heavy dark energy. It is not surprising that the Full Moon expresses this reality.
How you may be personally affected by the Full Moon depends on your rising sign and whether you have planets or points at late degrees of the Fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius).
